New Roots Institute Teaching Staff

JESSE TANDLER
Managing Director
With two decades of teaching, from high school at a charter school in New York City to UCLA, I’ve prioritized creating a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel comfortable being challenged and undermining their own assumptions to broaden their perspectives and grow as individuals and leaders. Each year, the Leadership Academy has some of the most motivated, compassionate, and intelligent students I've come across. Their personal growth in the program and the changes they make on their campuses—and, later, in the broader world—are the reason I believe that we can, and will, end factory farming.
LAUREN FERRUCCI
Director of Programs
I feel privileged to channel my 10+ years of corporate experience in program management and leadership training into empowering the next generation with the knowledge, skills and training to end factory farming. It's incredibly rewarding to see the transformative journey students go on - from initial uncertainty about how they can have an impact, to finding and launching campaigns and advocacy projects they are passionate about, to creating tangible impact on their campuses and in their communities.
TANWI WANGIKAR
Sr. Program Coordinator
As a former New Roots Institute fellow, I feel I am able to meaningfully relate with and support students going through the program now. I love to see students overcome challenges that stumped me when I was a student advocate. We have built our program to continuously identify and work around challenges students face doing this work. Through New Roots programming, I have met some of the most influential mentors and friends in my life, and I am grateful to be able to play that role for more students now. This program has a unique ability to help students realize how deeply they care about our food system, to identify their own strengths while learning, and to set in motion a plan of action that allows them to be the change they wish to see.

How You'll Transform

By the end of the program, nearly all fellows feel more connected to the anti-factory farming movement, giving them a powerful network of professionals and student advocates to lean on to create change.
The New Roots Leadership Development Program has been a transformational experience for my teenage daughter. The New Roots team has modeled professionalism and maintained rigorous standards. She has quickly developed into a true leader and advocate, spearheading campaigns to make tangible change at her school and community. As she applies to colleges, she does not have to pretend to be anything she is not; New Roots has helped her discover genuine clarity, focus and passion regarding her future.
LAURA, PARENT OF A SUMMER ‘24 FELLOW
The Leadership Academy has set me on the path of advocacy that I have always wanted but never knew how to find. Taking this course was originally far outside my comfort zone, but ultimately it has helped me shape my passion into something that is both efficient and effective for creating change.

ROSE, SUMMER '25 FELLOW
I learned that creating change doesn't require one specific career path, there are many entry points to make an impact. Seeing how these sectors overlap helped me understand where my own passion for food systems and public health fits in the bigger picture. It gave me confidence to pursue leadership opportunities and build partnerships with people from different backgrounds.
DANAH, SUMMER '25 FELLOW
What’s inspired me most is seeing how everyone here cares deeply about ending factory farming, even if our reasons differ. Some are driven by animal rights, others by public health, the environment, or social justice, but our values are complementary, and that’s where our strength lies. This program has allowed me to form beautiful relationships. We truly built a close-knit community together, and I now consider them like family.
